The Camera and Photos apps received substantial updates aligned with Liquid Glass principles, featuring streamlined interfaces that hide elements until needed. Many camera options now require swiping beyond standard modes to access Portrait and Cinematic Video features. The Phone app introduces Call Screening for unknown numbers and Hold Assist functionality that waits for live agents during customer service calls.
Apple made an unusual decision to jump from iOS 18 directly to iOS 26, skipping several version numbers to align with a year-based naming scheme across all platforms. This change reflects 2026, the year when most users will primarily use the operating system, despite its late 2025 release. The version numbering unification strategy brings consistency to Apple’s software ecosystem.
iOS 26 is compatible with iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and all newer models.
